Travels to Palma in Mallorca for beach and city fun is a must visit if you haven’t been yet. It is such an inspiring holiday city destination full of wonderful pattern inspiration, beaches, museums, restaurants and bars.
We have loved Palma for years and it is one of those places that I go that just feels like home as soon as I get there. I love the fact that it offers city life alongside the beach. We hire a bike and just cycle everywhere on the cycle paths. You can swim in the sea everyday with good snorkelling. You can visit the beautiful Cathedral and visit many inspiring galleries. As well as be part of the busy boating life in the city – We took part in the Copa del Rey racing event about 7 years ago and have been hooked visiting Palma Old Town ever since.
Just arriving back yesterday has inspired me to share my favourite places – whether you are going for a long weekend or a few weeks there is so much to see and do:
Favourite Restaurants include – Patron Lunares / La Rosa Tapas / La Boveda for Tapas / Centro Comercial S’Escorxador Tapas/ El Bungalow for a wonderful lunch right on the beach overlooking the sea / Enco for lunch or drinks in Portixol / Hotel Portixol / Breakfast at Coto.
Hotels & Apartments – I love staying in either with favourite hotels so far being Portixol Hotel, Hotel Feliz & Hotel Hospes Marciel & Spa or for an apartment in the Old Town, Santa Catalina or Portixol areas we mainly use Airbnb or Owners Direct.
Cafe & Bar Favourites include – Sant Andreu with its geometric patterned roof / Sky Bar In Bar Cuba for sundowners overlooking the Cathedral and boats / the outside bar at Museu Es Baluard for sundowners / El Pesquero for drinks next to the boats in the Port / Enco in Portixol after coming off the beach.
There are lots of good beaches that you can swim and snorkel at including Punta des Grells & Portixol, but must check more names next time we are over there! It is also really good to go paddle boarding at many beaches now and there is a growing number of places for canoeing and kite surfing.
Bikes we usually rent from Nano or Palma Bike.
Restaurants our two firm favourites are: Centro Comercial S’Escorxador were you find a seat in the middle of the building and then walk round and choose what tapas you fancy ordering to take back to your table. They also have great bands playing which gives the place such a special buzz. I also love Patron Lunares situated in Santa Catalina. My favourite starter here is the guacamole that you mash yourself at the table which is delicious. It is such a lovely relaxed look to the interior with wooden beams, classic mallorcan fabrics and pictures of boats and sailors.
Santa Catalina also has a great food market that is a real treat to visit, especially on a Saturday morning. It is called Mercado de Santa Catalina. This is also why we love renting a apartment so you can cook all the wonderful food for sale here. This is also a great area for funky bars, vintage and homeware shops.
I love the Joan Miro Foundation which I have written about before – Joan Miro Studio & Home – Creative Paradise. It is a magical inspiring place to visit for the art, architecture, gardens and views across the Palma Landscape.
Palma is full of pattern and colour inspiration – see one of my past blogs Palma full of Colour Inspiration.
Being a Camper shoe fan I also enjoy hunting out a bargain in Inca at their outlet shop! Perfect trip on a rainy afternoon!!
The Night Manager was an amazing series that was filmed in Mallorca. We haven’t been to the restaurant where the kidnapping happened though – Ca’s Patro near Deia. Think we will have to wait for a while though as apparently they have never been busier and you have to book months ahead for a front table overlooking the sea.
Enjoy and hope you love some of our favourite places and please share your new finds in Palma with us.
