A interview with Laura Gray – Interior Designer based in Nottingham.
Spotlight on: Interior Designer Laura Gray. My interview with Laura Gray an Interior Designer based in Nottingham – find out what inspires her.
She has been using our Natasha Marshall fabrics and wallpapers in her interior projects and is looking forward to sharing photos with us all very soon. We can’t wait to see them as she has chosen some stunning colour and pattern combinations.
I was keen to chat with her to find out more about herself and what inspires her as a designer…..
How I would describe my personal interior style:
I would describe my style as ‘relaxed elegance’. I love sumptuous fabrics and classic furniture but with a modern feel that lends itself to everyday family living.
My favourite interior item?
We recently inherited a Globe-Wernicke glass fronted bookcase, which I absolutely love. I have it stacked full of interiors magazines in my home office and wouldn’t let it go for the world!
My favourite art piece that I would love to have in my home?
My husband and I are both big fans of Sir Peter Blake. I would love his ‘100 Sources of Pop Art’, if only I had a wall big enough to show it off!
When it comes to my style of interiors I love.
So much!! I don’t have an absolute favourite genre, which is why I love working for so many different clients. I’m passionate about creating schemes that reflect my clients’ own personalities rather than having a one-size-fits-all approach. I also like interiors that stand the test of time – keeping things classic but then adding a little surprise with a pop of colour or a quirky accessory that can be easily updated over time.
Favourite places to shop around the UK.
I find it so exciting travelling to new places as there are always interiors gems to be uncovered. I particularly love Norfolk and the Cotswolds, but we recently visited Frome in Somerset and I found so many lovely eclectic shops there. Catherine Hill is a must for any visitors, with lovely vintage boutiques, crafty shops and interiors havens.
Favourite City and any little gems that you would recommend –
I have spent many happy holidays in Nice in the South of France and it feels very much like home. I find the back streets in the old town so inspiring and can wander for hours admiring the buildings and cobbled streets, as well as the wonderful fruit, veg and flower markets on the Cours Saleya. The colours seem so much more vibrant than back home (but maybe it’s just the sunshine!)
Who’s work do you find inspiring?
Sir Terence Conran has always been a huge inspiration. I met him in The Conran Shop when I was about ten years old and was completely awestruck when he actually spoke to me! I have always admired his style and business acumen (and also love eating in his restaurants!).
My favourite Natasha Marshall design and colourway –
I absolutely love ‘Shoot’ from the Alegre collection and it looks stunning in all colourways. I recently had a bespoke 60cm diameter lightshade made for a client in Shoot Cranberry which is incredible, but my personal favourite colourway is Nightshade. The new wallpaper collection is also fabulous and the Shoot design looks particularly great in Cactus green. I can’t wait to use it in one of my schemes!
Songs I love to listen too –
My All-time favourite band is Snow Patrol, but throw in a bit of Meghan Trainer and Mark Ronson for a good boogie and I’m happy.
My favourite night out or in –
A Sunday night in with my hubby by a roaring fire… Kids tucked up in bed, a glass of Malbec in one hand and a bar of Lindt chocolate in the other, snuggled on the sofa watching ‘Modern Family’ – life doesn’t get much better than that!
What are you reading just now –
I rarely get chance to read a book but have a dangerous addiction to magazines! My all-time favourite is Living Etc (in fact I have bought every single edition since it was launched!).
What are your mantras in life –
I don’t really have any mantras, but I do have a note stuck in the front of my interiors journal that makes me smile every day (and keeps me going when I have the odd panic about my recent career after 15 years in finance!) – a little reminder that I am following my dream…
