‘Spotlight On’ Heather Macrae from Because of Birds.

Latest ‘Spotlight On’ interview with Heather Macrae from Because of Birds.

It has been great to learn more about Heather from Because of Birds based in the town of Kirriemuir, Angus in Scotland. She makes beautiful curtains, blinds and home soft furnishings and you can choose fabrics and wallpapers from the Natasha Marshall collections. We loved it when she shared photos of her latest use of off-cuts – her homemade dog collar, bow tie and lead was genius made in Timber Firecracker!

In her spare time she loves using up offcuts of the fabrics she uses in her day job. Working on many fascinating craft projects. Read more about what inspires her and her loves below:

How I would describe my personal interior style –

Traditional/vintage but with a colourful quirky twist.

My favourite interior item?

A painted, but quite shabby, cast iron French street bar. It should be outside but it takes pride of place in my sitting room.

My favourite art piece that I would love to have in my home? –

Any original Faberge eggs – I wouldn’t be fussy – I’d take any one! The workmanship and intricacy of these eggs is breathtaking.

When it comes to my style of interiors I love –

The idea of the “homemade”. At the moment I’m obsessed with making as many things as I can using fabric and yarn. My business is curtains, blinds and soft furnishings so I love working with fabric. So far patchwork is a favorite for everything from curtains to tablecloths and bedspreads and of course, curtains. I have also been making my own lampshades with colourful trims, crocheted a hall carpet from garden twine (jute) and plan to knit a fireside rug. I also hate waste and have used leftover Timber design fabric to make a dapper dog collar and bow tie for my handsome old Labrador.

Favourite flea markets or place to shop around the world –

I am a regular at Taylor’s Auctions in Montrose. I love wandering around looking at the variety of things they always have for sale. I nearly always buy something- usually a piece of furniture to upcycle or a painting that I like. Unfortunately I might run out of rooms and walls soon!

My favourite city and little gems to recommend –

It has to be Funchal, Madeira. A city that is also a holiday resort- what could be better! There’s always something happening, with various festivals throughout the year. I’d particularly recommend the festive season- with its Christmas market and massive fireworks display at New Year.

Who’s work you find inspiring architect and or building –

My first visit to Funchal I stayed at the Casino Park Hotel and was totally blown away by the design of the hotel and its adjoining casino. It was designed by the Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer in 1966 and uses curves to great effect. With the casino attached it has a retro but futuristic feel and the interiors still reflect the style of that era. This has inspired my interest in retro and vintage look fabrics as opposed to my usual more traditional taste.

My current inspiration –

An elderly customer I have been working with over the last couple of years. She has downsized her home so I have been working with her to adapt her soft furnishings. She is a hoarder and has some fabulous vintage fabrics that she combines successfully with other more traditional items. Everything is colourful but works beautifully together. My favourite piece of work is a chair cover in a wonderful burnt orange and white fabric.

My favourite Natasha Marshall design and colourway –

Pompom alegre. It’s so warm and cheerful and has that vintage vibe that I so like at the moment. It looks great as a display backdrop for my vintage sewing machine.

Songs I love to listen too –

Anything by The Smiths, but “How Soon Is Now” is probably my favourite. For more modern bands I like the Killers, Artic Monkeys, Kasabian and Royal Blood.

My favourite night out or in –

It would have to be a lovely evening walk with my dogs and my husband- but only if it’s light and dry! The countryside around my home town of Kirriemuir is beautiful and I’m never far from a stunning view.

What are you reading just now –

I am currently reading Dead and Buried by Quintin Jardine. I particularly like his books as they are based in Edinburgh so I can relate to the locations, if not the events!

My mantras in life –

I have lots but the main ones are:  Treat others as you wish to be treated yourself. Be honest and decent. Do it now. It’s alright-nobody’s dead etc etc (when things go a wee bit pear shaped)
