How to create and style a modern interior

How to create and style a modern interior by using mood boards.

The Natasha Marshall design team love helping our clients create beautiful interiors with our products, and one of the best ways to do this is by creating a mood board. It is the perfect way to experiment with as many colours and patterns as possible without going over budget. All you need to do is collect some paint tester pots in your desired colours, order some samples of your favourite NM designs or visit your local stockist who will help with your selections. Then begin combining these on a mood board using the tips and advice listed below by the NM design team.

Pick a colour scheme.

Two of the best ways to do this is to select a multi coloured design as your main fabric or wallpaper. At NM we would suggest Flip, as this holds seven different colours and will give you a great degree of flexibility when selecting all the other products to go in your interior. You can choose a colour story that is bold and trend driven like Firecracker, or opt for a more calming palette such as Sand. The perfect way to introduce more colour to an interior is by adding your favourite paintings, rugs and existing products which will also add some personality to the space. If you would like to add quirkier details to your home we would recommend any of the items sold by Skandic Hus, as they stock a variety of woderful brands from ArchitectMade, iittala and Marimekko. We love the quality and finish of Annie SloanFarrow and Ball and Little Greene’s paints. The wide selection of colours that they supply means there is always the perfect shade to accompany your fabric choice!

Bring pattern in to your home.

You can easily add pattern to a room by decorating a statement wall in a brightly coloured graphic wallpaper such as PomPom Nightshade. This can be complemented by smaller scale prints of a similar colour like Bud and Link. If you would rather keep you walls neutral why not use Tandem plain wallpaper and introduce pops of colour and pattern through your interior accessories? We would recommend upholstering a chair in our Alibi fabric which could be decorated with some Blossom Misty Blue cushionsTin Smiths offer a wonderful selection of interior products – their selection of brightly coloured architectural lights are a real hit with the NM team.  This room could be finished off perfectly by using furniture from Muuto, we love their Scandinavian style and the beautiful finish on their products.

Create a relaxing space.

The Natasha Marshall Ikon range is the perfect collection for creating a relaxing and calming space. These graphic prints are available in a variety of fresh airy colours that will brighten your space in a contemporary manner whilst blending in with your existing products. When this collection was originally designed we wanted fabrics that would enhance an architectural space and not over power it, this is why we created subtle prints that added depth and were easy to live with. We would recommend a neutral coloured wallpaper such as Plectrum Warm Sand which will add warmth to your room and will easily sit with a variety of other designs. By selecting a subtle pattern for your curtains such as Drift, you will create a canvas for other designs. This means that you can use your cushions as a way of introducing trend lead colours and patterns, and change these seasonally or as often as you wish. By coupling these patterns with clean cut furniture from Pinch, you will create a space that is modern and truly timeless. Lastly, no room would be complete without accessories and we personally decorate our homes with products from Unto This Last as their designs are fun but beautiful.
