The Natasha Marshall design studio is based in a quirky building called The Printworks which is accessed through a tenement building in Otago Street in Glasgow’s vibrant West End. It is a wonderful experience to run our design studio from a building we have designed and built with architect friends.
About the studio
When we found the original disused Printworks it was a ruinous building at the back of a tenement urban block near Kelvinbridge in Glasgow. It took around two years to redevelop as the original building had to be pulled down but the narrow building in the back lane had concealed a large basement below a raised backyard. We raised the roof on the original building and a lightwell was introduced into the basement to create a spacious office and studio in the new build.
The building was completed in 2008 and it won awards for GIA Best Small Works Award in 2009, Winner of the RIBA Award 2009 and Nominated for a Scottish Design award in 2009. It was an amazing feeling to see it go from an unloved derelict building to an award winning building. You can read more about the building and the designers behind it in Natasha’s Blog.
